Typography Week 3
I’m copying above another copy of the words I chose last week following Hannah’s advice to include a version with a border. The main focus this week will be the second chance to do some actual letterpress work which I enjoyed enormously.
Iva and myself worked together on this part of the project. When discussing which words we’d choose for our poster, I remembered that she had told me that she was brought up in Portugal AND of a local link to Portugal via the Norfolk Street Bakery – just round the corner from ARU Cambridge Campus – an independent artisan bakery famous for its Portuguese specialities. So we decided on a colourful – red, yellow and green – Potuguese theme celebrating the most famous delicacy – the Pastel de Nata.
There is a myth that the Pastel de Nata was invented in England by Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese Queen married King Charles II of England. In fact, it is thought that the origins of this delicacy are much, much older and are associated with Catholic monasteries in Portugal, though Catherine is credited with popularising tea drinking at court in the years after her marriage in 1662 (two years after the restoration). I’m sure she would have liked our poster though!
