Journeys with Mai
We’re heading into the last lap of our Journey with Mail with the pitch to Fitzwilliam Museum due to take place in just 24 hours. I have really enjoyed this process and it has definitely stretched me a bit. It has also fitted in to some of the pillars of my personal learning manifesto – particularly ‘Learning with Courage and Curiosity’ and ‘Community and Collaboration’.
To take the second first, it has been interesting to see and be part of the varied skills of students from all 3 years of the Digital Media Production course and to share, learn from and experience their varied skills and talents. We all come from a different place and stage in life and I feel that this has helped to establish the ‘Va’ in our relationship as ‘Tima Tahi’.
I’ve had to be a little bold too – before this project, I didn’t know that I’d be able to design a slide deck with both animation and the look and feel of the Regency Period. I’m going to post where it’s at in its current iteration below but this process has helped me to get out of my ‘I can’t do this’ mindset – most evident a week or so ago when I began to question whether I really was cut out for the student life in general and this course in particular. A week on, I believe I am.
It is true that my level of skill when it comes to the digital world is a long way behind others in my cohort (a nice university-ish word, don’t you think?) but I am finding a ‘voice’ for my creativity that I have long denied myself and it other settings, been denied. And I love that. I feel that there is a place at the table for all of us and I have such a sense of fulfilment as a result that while recognising my limitations, I am also beginning to recognise that this ageing soul also has unrealised potential and I am moving to a place where I can begin to acknowledge that and to work around it, with others, to deliver a product of which we can all be proud. Thank you Tima Tahi – Iva and Tony from my year, Adetola from year 2 and Oriana and Savana from the final year. It’s not quite finished yet but I am proud of the journey we have taken together.
